    Note that iOS looks for URL like /apple-touch-icon-76x76.png, if it does not find interesting stuff in the HTML code (a bit like what IE is doing with /favicon.ico). So it is important to keep the file names are they are above. It is also important to consider that Android/Chrome is also using these pictures.

    To specify an icon for the entire website (every page on the website), place an icon file in PNG format in the root document folder called apple-touch-icon.png. To specify an icon for a single webpage or replace the website icon with a webpage-specific icon, add a link element to the webpage, as in:
  4. Use Apple touch icon (apple-touch-icons)apple-touch-icons requires that at least one Apple touch icon is present and of a standard size.. Why is this important? Since iOS 1.1.3, Safari for iOS has supported a way for developers to specify an image that will be used to represent the web site or app on the home screen.The image is known as the touch icon.

    Dimension-specific pictures, such as apple-touch-icon-76x76.png; Precomposed touch icons (eg. apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png) apple-touch-icon.png; As a consequence, when a web site as no apple-touch-icon.png or this picture is somewhat wrong, it may still support the Apple touch icon successfully. For example, by providing alternative ...

    The Apple spec allows for two types of icons, apple-touch-icon and apple-touch-icon-precomposed. The latter allows one to link to an icon that will not have the glossy highlighting applied. I've updated the javascript, so to use it just edit the address of your bookmarklet in Safari and paste in the appropriate line as copied from the link below.

    If no icons are specified using a link element, the website root directory is searched for icons with the apple-touch-icon or apple-touch-icon-precomposed prefix. For example, if the appropriate icon size for the device is 57 x 57, the system searches for filenames in the following order: apple-touch-icon-57x57-precomposed.png; apple-touch-icon ...

    Other than a slightly-blocky icon for anyone who saves my URL to their home screen on an iOS device, are there any downsides to just symlinking each of apple-touch-icon{-120x120,76x76,}{-precomposed,}.png to my 20x21 favicon.ico?

    Zev: apple-touch-icon never was a registered rel value; it was never really valid. The only thing that changed is the validator, which now explicitly marks invalid link relations as validation errors. The same goes for shortcut; however, that one quickly was registered after the recent validator.nu update.. Anyhow, I think we can all agree that it sucks having to use invalid markup just to get ...

  1. Minimalist solution - Recommended

    A common practice is to create a single 180x180 icon, which is the highest expected resolution, and let the iOS devices scale it down as needed. It is declared with:

    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="/path/to/apple-touch-icon.png">

    Exhaustive solution - Not recommended

    Apple specs specify new sizes for iOS7:

    • 60x60
    • 76x76
    • 120x120
    • 152x152

    And also for iOS8:

    • 180x180

    In addition, precomposed icons are deprecated.

    As a consequence, to support both new devices (running iOS7) and older (iOS6 and prior), the generic code is:

    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="57x57" href="/apple-touch-icon-57x57.png">
    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="114x114" href="/apple-touch-icon-114x114.png">
    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="72x72" href="/apple-touch-icon-72x72.png">
    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="144x144" href="/apple-touch-icon-144x144.png">
    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="60x60" href="/apple-touch-icon-60x60.png">
    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="120x120" href="/apple-touch-icon-120x120.png">
    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="76x76" href="/apple-touch-icon-76x76.png">
    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="152x152" href="/apple-touch-icon-152x152.png">
    <link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="/apple-touch-icon-180x180.png">

    In addition, you should create a 180x180 picture named apple-touch-icon.png.

    You might want to know that this favicon generator can create all these pictures at once. Full disclosure: I'm the author of this site.
